Alrite me lovelies

Well we’re in Bristol at the mo in the final few days of our Motorhome trip and in the UK (excluding Ireland where we’re going next).  We’ve had a lovely time in the South West visiting Devon, Dorset and Cornwall. Really lovely people, friendly, helpful and gorgeous scenery.

After getting off the ferry, we spent the night on a farm site in Devon – we knew we were back in the UK as we were driving on the other side of the road again and the ‘roads’ go from 2 lane to single lane to track before widening again with lots of potholes, lumps, cracks etc! One thing we will say for France is the tolls may be REALLY expensive but the roads are in good nick!

We then headed towards the coast to visit Lulworth Cove and Durdle door. There were some very hardy people at Lulworth Cove getting in the water, kayaking and cycling, the shingle beach didn’t really lend itself to sitting but they did do a yummy bacon buttie – breakfast of champions! Off to Durdle Door which was a bit of a hike down to the lookout and then a loooong way down to the beach itself. While there was a bit of sand, the beaches were largely gravelly (not that it looks like that in the pics), so am not sure what all the families walking down with towels, buckets/shovels, beach balls etc were going to do?? However, the scenery was spectacular and worth the hike. Just to note – they charge for parking and it’s pretty expensive. £6 for 1 hour and £25 for 1-4 hrs. You can combine parking at both the cove and Durdle Door, however, we were only there in total including driving for about 2 hours so was cheaper to pay separately.

Our next stop was Exeter – staying at a club site by the racecourse. We caught the bus into town, wandering around for the day. Like most English towns, there was an impressive cathedral and lots of really old buildings interspersed among new ones. A mix of cobbled and paved streets. Mild but sunny weather made it a very pleasant stop off.

Making our way towards Cornwall, we stopped off at a wee fishing village, Looe, and wished we were there for longer. What a great little town. Caught a taxi into the village, met lots of people – tourists and locals, and I managed to boogie the night away at The Ship Inn with my new friends. Even managed to get Trap up for a couple of dances!!!!! A very cute town with narrow cobbled streets, pubs/restaurants on both sides of the river.

Crossing into Cornwall, we took the wrong road and ended up crossing back over the toll bridge and then had to go around the round-about and back to Cornwall again!!!!!

After meandering through country roads and cute villages we landed in Penzance for a few nights. A 15 minute walk into the centre and there seemed to be a disproportionate number of pubs compared with the size of the town – so right up our alley 😁. It’s a great base to head to Lands End from – only a 30 min drive in the motorhome.

Which takes us to the bottom of the UK. We’ve visited the top (excluding islands) and now the bottom of the UK. Again pretty cool scenery and of course had to take the obligatory photo of the signpost. We didn’t realise you were supposed to queue up and pay for professional photographer to take your pic and pay for it – we just waltzed up took a couple of pics and headed off. In our defence, we were there quite early and I don’t think they were open yet – plus there were staff hanging around and no one said anything so…….

Heading round to the north side of the Cornwall peninsula, we stayed at a really nice club site in Gwinthian before heading to Bristol to get our new bike rack fitted and pick up some new suitcases (my pack gave up the ghost after Costa Rica and we now need more space 🧳)!

So, as we come to the end of this leg of the trip,

  • our favourite cities were York and Shrewsbury
  • favourite small town was Llandudno & Conwy
  • most unforgettable experience was doing the NC 500 in Scotland
  • most entertaining experience was Looe
  • special mention to meeting up with Sara in Glossop – fantastic to catch up after 37 years, and seeing the Bennett's in Barrhead.

Our next post will be from Ireland, so till then duwgenes, ffarwell, slàn leibh, ta-ra.

J&T xx
